Start from the kilogram

That means you never have to memorise a web of unit-to-unit ratios; you convert to kilograms and back out, and every other figure falls into place.

Worked examples in both directions
A few concrete conversions show how the anchors combine. To find how many short tons are in 2,000 kg, divide by the short-ton factor: 2,000 ÷ 907.18474 ≈ 2.2046 short tons. To find the metric-ton figure for the same mass, divide by 1,000: 2,000 kg = 2 metric tons exactly. To express a metric ton in pounds, multiply by the kilogram-to-pound figure: 1,000 ÷ 0.45359237 ≈ 2,204.6226 lb.
Chaining works too. Say a load is 6,000 lb. Convert to kilograms first (6,000 × 0.45359237 = 2,721.55422 kg), then to short tons (2,721.55422 ÷ 907.18474 = 3 short tons exactly, which checks out because 6,000 lb is three lots of 2,000 lb). Avoiding the usual slips
Two mistakes account for most bad conversions. The first is using an approximate pound factor such as 0.454 or 2.2 when precision matters; the exact figures are 0.45359237 kg and about 2.2046226 lb, and the rounded ones drift on large weights. The second is mixing up which ton is in play, since dividing a weight by the wrong ton factor produces a plausible-looking but wrong answer.
