Why the kilogram is the language of trade

Cross-border commerce runs on the metric system. Customs declarations, bills of lading, and shipping manifests overwhelmingly state net and gross weight in kilograms, with larger consignments summarised in metric tons. This is deliberate: the kilogram is the SI base unit, recognised by every national measurement authority, so a weight in kilograms means the same thing in every port and jurisdiction.

The friction appears when a shipment originates in the United States, where the short ton is the domestic norm. A US exporter quoting "200 tons" must convert to metric before the figure reaches an international document, or the paperwork will overstate the weight. The three conversions you actually use

A worked example where the ton type decides the invoice

Suppose a US mill ships steel it records internally as 500 tons. Read as short tons, that is 500 × 907.18474 = 453,592.37 kg, or about 453.59 metric tons. If the overseas buyer's contract is priced per metric ton and someone treats the 500 as metric tons, the declared weight jumps to 500,000 kg — an overstatement of 46,407.63 kg, more than 46 metric tons of phantom steel. On a per-tonne price that is a serious billing error in either direction.

Container weights and the verified gross mass rule

Ocean freight adds a safety-driven reason to get kilograms right. Under the international SOLAS convention, a packed container cannot be loaded onto a ship unless its verified gross mass (VGM) has been provided to the carrier — and that figure is declared in kilograms. VGM covers the cargo, the packaging, the dunnage, and the empty container's tare weight combined, so every input must be converted to a common kilogram basis before they are summed.

If cargo weights arrive in short tons from a US supplier and the container tare is stamped in kilograms, adding them without converting produces a wrong VGM and a container that may be refused or mis-stowed.
