Materials arrive in tons; site math runs in kilograms

A construction schedule talks in tons — tonnes of rebar, tonnes of ready-mix, tonnes of aggregate — but crane capacities, lift plans, and load calculations live in kilograms. Bridging the two is the same short conversion every time: metric tons to kilograms means multiply by 1,000; US short tons to kilograms means multiply by 907.18474. Getting the unit right matters more than the arithmetic ever will.

A 12-tonne steel delivery is 12,000 kg. Booked in US short tons instead, "12 tons" is only 10,886.22 kg — over a tonne lighter, which changes both your lift plan and your bill of materials. Worked example: a concrete pour

Say you are pouring a slab that needs 25 cubic metres of reinforced concrete. At roughly 2,400 kg per cubic metre, that is about 60,000 kg of concrete, or 60 metric tons. If your ready-mix supplier quotes deliveries in tonnes, 60 t is exactly 60,000 kg and the numbers line up cleanly. If a US supplier quotes short tons, 60,000 kg divided by 907.18474 is about 66.14 short tons — the same concrete, a higher ton count.

Aggregate follows the same pattern. A 40-tonne order of crushed stone is 40,000 kg by the metric factor. Steel: where the ton system really counts

Structural steel is priced and specified by weight, so the ton system flows straight into cost. Order 30 tonnes of section steel and you expect 30,000 kg. If the mill invoices in short tons, 30 short tons is 27,215.54 kg — you have paid for less steel than the round "30 tons" implied. On a big frame that discrepancy compounds across every delivery.

The safe workflow is the same one importers use: anchor on kilograms. Take the supplier's weight, convert it to kilograms with the correct factor, and keep that as the number your estimate and your lift plan share.
